On Christmas Eve 1995, Karen Loucks of Denver, Colorado, read an article in Parade magazine that would forever change her life and those of countless others. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams, "Joy to the World" was about children who were coping with serious illnesses, but it was the picture of a downy-headed little girl named Laura clutching her blanket that touched Karen the most. According to the child, who was battling leukemia at the time, her beloved "blankie" had helped her endure countless rounds of intensive chemotherapy treatments.
